Payroll accuracy is a data problem, not a calculation problem
Payroll engines rarely calculate wrongly. They calculate correctly on wrong inputs. Attendance corrections captured over WhatsApp, leave approvals sitting in an inbox and last-minute reimbursement claims are the actual source of every payroll dispute.
That is why attendance and leave automation must precede payroll automation, not follow it.
The order that works
Across HRMS rollouts we have run, this order produces visible wins fastest.
- Attendance with biometric or geo-tagged capture, so the input is machine-generated
- Leave and holiday policy encoded as rules, with approval chains
- Request management for corrections, so exceptions are tracked rather than messaged
- Payroll with statutory components, TDS and payslip generation
- Employee and organisation hierarchy management, so approvals route correctly
- Reports for finance, statutory filing and management
TDS: get the declaration cycle right
Most TDS pain traces to a single gap: investment declarations collected once at the start of the year and proofs collected in a panic in January. When declarations, proofs and month-wise projected tax live in the HRMS, employees see their own projection change as they submit, and February payroll stops being a crisis.
What HR gets back
The measurable return is hours. Attendance reconciliation, leave balance queries, payslip re-issues and manual statutory report preparation together consume a large share of an HR generalist week. Automating them does not reduce headcount; it moves HR time from processing to people.
